Your guide to applying cream eyeshadow

A couple of years ago, I purchased a cream Essence eyeshadow. It was in a small round tub, and it was a silverish grey. I liked the color when I seen it the first time. This little tub sat in my draw for years, and in the beginning of the year I was packing all my products and I had a look at it; it wasn’t very creamy and unfortunately I had to get rid of it. Something which I hate doing even if I’m not using the product!

After that I stuck to powder shadows, until I seen the Kyshadows in Kylie’s Holiday Edition, and I fell in love! I had to get my hands on these little tubs. After months of saving up I was finally able to get my hands on these products. And yes! It was so worth the wait. The colors and pigmentation are amazing.

When I first tried these products I had no idea that cream eyeshadow cannot be applied the same way that powder shadows are applied, and after an application in less then half an hour the product creased.

I was quite angry and disappointed and I thought something could possibly be wrong with the product. I then thought if this product costs so much it should at least be working, little did I know that I wasn’t applying it properly!  After many failed applications, I decided that I needed to do something about this! There had to be a way for it to look good on me.

After testing and trying out many different methods, I finally came up with something that actually works and guarantees the product to stay on your eyes for an extremely long period of time.

  1. This is the most important rule of cream shadow: apply it using your finger! You may use a small flat brush but for it to actually sit, use your finger!
  2. Apply a concealer to your eyelids, this could be a cream or liquid concealer and then use a damp Beautyblender to blender the product in.
  3. Then apply a dab of eyeshadow primer, just a teeny tiny bit not a little bit more.
  4. Once you have done that, apply an eyeshadow that is the same color as your skin, I used a foundation sponge to apply and blend the eyeshadow.
  5. If you are going to be applying a powder eyeshadow, then you need to apply it in this step. You cannot apply a powder shadow after you have applied the cream shadow, so ensure your apply all your powder products before you apply the cream eyeshadow.
  6. The cream shadow is applied last, using your fingertip to spread and pat the product to how to you want it to be.
  7. I then apply a fixing powder to my eyelid.
  8. Lastly, I use a fixing spray so that it can stay in place.

Yes I know it sounds like a lot of work, but these are some steps that need to be done in order for the cream shadow to stay in place. Once I figured this out, I’m constantly using my cream shadows as I don’t have to work about it creasing.

Product Review: The Body Shop Fresh Nude Foundation

It’s been a while since I last blogged or reviewed a product. So, here goes…

While I was out shopping recently, I was browsing through the skincare range of The Body Shop until this product caught my eye. It was a neat little bottle of foundation.

Above: The Body Shop Fresh Nude Foundation

I’ve always loved The Body Shop skincare products, but I wasn’t too sure about their makeup range, although if they were putting in just as much effort into a makeup range the results would be amazing.

Although there was a tad bit of uncertainty in the back of my head, I thought, “Oh what the hell? The worst that could happen is that it doesn’t work as well as another foundation or doesn’t blend as well but then you can just mix it with another product.”

And well being the being that I am, I know that if it wasn’t according to my liking I would most likely mix with a whole bunch of other products till it came to my liking because makeup is expensive and you can’t just throw products away, especially if its still new.

I ended up buying it.

And to my amazement it exceeded my expectations. (Well, I didn’t have a lot of them anyways.)

The bottle was a tiny bit smaller then the usual foundation bottle, but it was quite neat and the foundation easily came out without creating a mess unlike other foundation bottles. I applied it with a brush and then used a damp beauty blender.

The foundation is a creamy formula, its extremely light weight although it can be buildable but it does feel like your natural skin on your face. I wore it the entire day to work and it felt amazing on my skin. It was also able to cover up everything include the redness around my nose which has become extremely visible lately. It covers all the redness and breakouts without it looking too fake. Its extremely natural and it does make your skin look good without you having to plaster on makeup. Its definitely durable and can last the entire day and night if it is set properly without it getting cakey.

I haven’t even mentioned the best part about this product; it doesn’t have the typical foundation smell but rather a really light, fresh scent and this fresh scent is left on your skin the entire day! I literally, cannot get enough of the smell its amazing!

For dewy, fresh and natural looking skin I would definitely recommend The Body Shop Fresh Nude Foundation.

My verdict: 4.2/5

P.S. I’d love to hear what you think about this product if you’ve tried it.

Is the Silisponge the new Beauty Blender?

I’m sure you’ve heard and seen all the fuss about this weird little clear object which resembles plastic and all the beauty gurus have been ravishing about how its changing their game of makeup. I too like most of you seen all this, but I wasn’t sold on a small, weird little plastic hanging my makeup game but being the curious being that I am, I obtained a Silisponge.

When it arrived I was astonished at how it looked, but it felt really soft and extremely cool on my hand. I was extremely sceptical about using it, and it lied on my table for a few weeks until recently, when I was obliged to use it as all my blenders were just washed, little had I known that this small, weird plastic would change my life!

The SiliSponge

The Silisponge is at first a bit challenging to use but once you get the hang of it, your face will thank you! I promise! Silisponge uses about a quarter of the amount of foundation that you usually use with a brush or blender, if you apply the normal amount which you usually use you will notice that the silisponge doesn’t work and it won’t blend because there’s way too much product. You have to actually get the hang of the amount of product you need in order for the sponge to work. This see through plastic is made out of silicone and encapsulated in a super- flexible material which called thermoplastic polyurethane, and this allows your products such as foundation, concealer, highlighter or creamy blush not to soak thus using less product.

And that’s not even the best part of the SiliSponge! Unlike your other applicators, its super easy to clean. You can rinse it clean with water and soap, wipe it with a clean cloth or if you in a hurry, you can wipe it with one of  your makeup wipe. That’s the absolute best part of the SiliSponge, you can wash or wipe and be on the go, the moment you are done! Unlike other applicators where you have to wait for hours. The only thing which I don’t like about the SiliSponge is that its a bit challenging blending around the nose and the inner corner of your eye, its going to take a little bit more practise to get the hang of that.

My verdict: Apart from that, I love the Silisponge and I do recommend going and getting yourself one immediately!

I wish I knew this before getting Eyelash Extensions

HAPPY NEW YEAR DOLLS!

img_20161229_124414

I hope each and every one of you had a lovely festive season, and I wish you all the best for the upcoming year. I would also like to thank each and everyone of you for keeping up with my blog, I know I haven’t had the best track record on blogging but hey it’s a new year and I’m going to try and catch up. Today I’m going to be writing about eyelash extensions and my experiences and knowledge thereof.

Eyelash extensions are amazing, they take your makeup and your face to another level and ensures that you always are on point even on your-not-so-pretty days. There is however a downside to getting your eyelashes done, which I wish I had known prior to getting them done.

If you are reading this and have no idea what eyelash extensions are or what I’m talking about, what world are you living in?

Well, let me break it down for you. Eyelash extensions are individual lashes which  are applied to your natural lashes which enhances the length, thickness and fullness of your own lashes, its usually done by a certified technician, you can do it by yourself but its a tedious task; these extensions which are done by a technician will cost you an arm, yes, really! its quite expensive, although totally worth it and it will last for about 4-6 weeks or less. False eyelashes and eyelash extensions are not the same thing, false eyelashes can be taken off immediately after wearing them, whereas lash extensions lasts for quite a while.

The perk of having these lash extensions is that you look fabulous all the time without even trying, you even wake up fabulous! Who doesn’t love waking up that way! However it takes hours to get them done, and you might have to lay down with your eyes closed for up to three hours which makes you quite cringy!

You also might have to alter the way you sleep, if you sleep on your face on in any other weird face position, when you wake up your eyelash extensions are good be all weird, heading in all directions. In the morning when you wake up, to wash your face you will have to be extremely careful around the eye area and when you shower too. If you are like me and shower more then twice a day then they don’t last as long and they not as pretty after each time I shower.

And did I mention that they are quite high maintenance? Each day you are required to brush out your lashes, I used an old mascara wand. After over two weeks, you most likely will have to go fill them in as the lashes may start falling off, and it could cost up to R200,00 or more, depending on the eyelash clinic. Also its quite challenging putting on eyeliner and removing off your eye makeup has to be done with make-up remover wipes, and should be done carefully as a lash could come off whilst you wiping.

Lastly, when you have extensions on, your normal eyelashes don’t grow and frankly when I took them off they looked shorter; if you continuously have extensions your eyelashes will be like little stubbles. Each eyelash starts falling off on their own, but if you do decide to take them out on your own cos as they start falling out it looks like spider webs, sort of, then you can use baby oil to carefully take it, however this can be extremely painful.

Yes, I do wish I knew this before I got extensions, although I don’t think I would have changed my mind, because lets face it, lashes are everything! I will most likely go and do them once again, although I’ll now know what to expect.

What are your thoughts or experiences regarding lash extensions? I’d love to hear about it!

Foundation on a Budget

Foundation forms the base of any look, and with the right foundation blended into your face you can conquer the world! Yes ladies, you all know what I’m talking about. In the morning when you put your face on,your foundation is your go- to product and once you’ve perfectly blended it in and added some eyeliner, mascara and a bold lippie, you are a queen ready to slay the day and whatever may be headed your way. It is crucial to purchase a foundation that caters to your needs, blends effortlessly and doesn’t allow any holes to occur in your pocket. As a student and a makeup junkie, my face always has to be on point, so it is crucial for me to get a good buy for my money. Foundation just covers up whatever you would like to hide, while giving you a fresh looking face. Yes, you need sleep in order to have nice looking skin but foundation just helps to enhance your skin and just gives you a face that doesn’t look weary or tired.

Foundation is one of the basic essentials that every girl needs in her make- up bag, whether you are a makeupholic or not. My skin is not that bad but I do love a good foundation just to ensure that my face is dewy and at times flawless. When I started wearing foundation, I would just use the same one without realizing what the actual differences between different foundations and brands were. As I started learning more about foundation I realized what my needs were and knew what I was looking for as I went shopping. I was able to obtain foundation that suited my needs and at the same time fitted my wallet. I’ve decoded the best foundation/s on a budget that will your face an effortless look, without looking less then a high- end product.
